Sunday Salon: Reading in Paradise
I had time to read today, and in fact had one of the most relaxing days I've had in a while. I spent a good part of it outside, taking a walk and shooting some basketballs and then reading in the driveway. The last of these was particularly blissful. I wanted to try to capture the experience of it, the most glorious weather, a slight breeze, background noises, a beautiful sky, the girls flitting about. So, this is what it was like to be me this afternoon:
Meanwhile, the book I had in hand was Peter Abrahams' Delusion, which I'm nearing the end of. It's the first book of his I've read, and I've been meaning to read him for a while. I've got one of his other books, Down the Rabbit Hole, on the TBR shelves. Delusion is about a guy, "Pirate," who served 20 years for a murder he didn't/may not have committed, and what happens to the woman whose testimony put him away when evidence turns up that appears to exonerate him. It's well done, and suspenseful, but somehow not in a heart-racing sort of way.
The other book currently in progress is Mary Poppins, which I'm reading to the girls--both of them at once, and since this is hard to engineer, we're going rather slowly. It is immensely interesting, though, because of the profound difference between the book and the movie. I shan't tell you now when one I prefer, or what those differences might be....
