Wild boars, coming to a bookstore near you!

I'm happy to report that the Johns Hopkins University Press will be publishing my book Reading Herodotus: A Guided Tour through the Wild Boars, Dancing Suitors, and Crazy Tyrants of The History. It should be out in the fall of 2012.

Crossword: Secret Santa's Helpers

This week's Sunday New York Times crossword is a tricky one. There aren't any thematic clues per se. One is supposed to complete the puzzle and then treat it like a word search puzzle and find the word ELF in the puzzle 20 times--horizontally, vertically, or diagonally; backwards of forwards.

Difficult to get the answers across here, and so far I've only found 19 of them....

Update: Forget my stupid diagram (which I've now deleted)! Douglas over at Crossword Bebop has made a much better list of the ELVES in this puzzle. Turns out I missed his numbers 14 and 15 (and I added one that was wrong out of desperation).

1.

The ELF you posted starting with the E in 38a is not touching squares. You missed the ELF going diagonally and backwards from the E in Ecce 93a'L in awol 88a, and the F in flexibleFlyers 81a

Hi, Ruth. No, I got the one starting at 93A, etc. But I'm still missing something.

I was wondering about that 38A one. Since I couldn't find anything else I figured they were accepting that one. (That is, there's a black square between the E and the L. Not at all sure that that's legitimate.)
