Wild boars, coming to a bookstore near you!

I'm happy to report that the Johns Hopkins University Press will be publishing my book Reading Herodotus: A Guided Tour through the Wild Boars, Dancing Suitors, and Crazy Tyrants of The History. It should be out in the fall of 2012.

Somerset and all the Bratz do it...

So, Mel and Rebecca were watching an episode of the Simpsons. And Mel became excited because she saw Marge doing something that she'd also seen being done on one of her Bratz DVDs. She had Rebecca rewind the show so that I could watch too, this activity that was so alien to her experience and yet which she was now seeing in a second context: "Look!" she cried out. "The Bratz do that!"

Right. Well, I do own an iron and ironing board, but it's apparently the case that I haven't actually used them in Mel's lifetime.

This reminds me of an earlier Simpsons-related post of mine....

1.

That is so cool, Debra.
Good on you.
I admit to caving into the peer pressure on occasion, but i would rather do the ironing than fix the car.

2.

I use the iron just about every day and find it very relaxing. Sometimes I'll iron enough shirts for a week or two at time but usually I iron as needed. Ironing is a task that is mindless but you have to pay attention to what you are doing so it is completely perfect for clearing your mind of all the things bothering you. Maybe I should write a book called The Zen of Ironing. ;)

3.

Oh, I find it too difficult for mindless activity. I find it nearly impossible. Getting the sleeves right? And ironing around buttons? We should all just wear sheets with holes in them to poke our heads through.

4.

I mean that it is mindless in the sense that you can't think about anything else. You can't worry about the bills, or be concerned about some problem at work, or worry about the kids because ironing takes all of your attention. To iron properly requires complete concentration on the issue at hand.

5.

A steamer is an excellent device, works quite well and it's so easy!

6.

Wow. If I had clothes to iron then I'd go with the steamer.

I enjoy--well, "enjoy" is a little strong--but I don't mind washing dishes because it's mindless in the other sense. You can daydream while doing it.

7.

Deb, that is priceless!
